Which problems get priority
We prioritize three situations: a door that won't close and leaves the house open, a door that won't open and traps a vehicle someone needs, and a door that is hanging or off track and poses a safety risk.
For these, garage door companies carry the parts that cause most emergencies, including springs in common sizes, cables, rollers, sensors and opener parts, so the repair can often be finished in a single trip.
Problems that are annoying but not urgent, like a noisy door or an intermittent remote, are still handled quickly, at a time that suits you.

Right now: what to do
Unplug the opener. Keep children and pets out of the garage. Don't try to lift a door with a broken spring or cable, and don't stand under a door stuck partway.
If the door won't close, move valuables inside, lock the door between the garage and the house and turn on an outside light. If you have to leave, let a neighbor know.
If a car is trapped and the springs look intact, the manual release may let you lift the door. If it's heavy, stop; that's a spring problem.
Write down what happened and when. If the door was damaged by a vehicle or a storm, that note and a few photos will help with any insurance claim later.

Hail, wind and the February freeze
Central Texas storms can be violent. Hail dents panels, wind pushes wide doors out of their tracks and lightning-related surges damage opener boards. During the 2021 winter storm, many garages had doors frozen to the slab and openers that failed trying to lift them.
After severe weather, check the door before relying on it: does it run straight, does the seal meet the floor, does the opener respond normally? If not, schedule a repair, and photograph any hail damage for insurance.
A battery backup and a surge protector on the opener's outlet are inexpensive precautions.

After a collision
Backing into a closed door, or leaving before it's fully up, usually damages the bottom panels, the track on one side and its rollers. The door may still move, but it's likely to come off track soon.
Stop using it, take photos and schedule the repair. Panels can sometimes be replaced individually; otherwise the door can be made safe and closed until a new one is installed.
If insurance is involved, ask for an itemized estimate.

Fair and upfront
Urgency shouldn't mean surprises. You'll hear about any after-hours or weekend fee when we phone you back, and the technician gives you the repair price before starting.
Most emergencies come down to a spring, a cable, a roller, a track or the opener. Be wary of anyone pushing a whole new door or opener on an emergency call without showing you what failed.
If something doesn't feel right, tell us. It helps us decide who we schedule.

Help us arrive with the right parts
An urgent visit goes faster when the technician knows what to expect. Tell us whether the door is up, down or stuck in between, whether you heard a loud snap, what the opener does when you press the button and whether the door is one car wide or two.
A quick photo of the spring above the door, the cables at the bottom corners and the label on the opener is often enough for the technician to load the correct spring sizes and cables before leaving. That can be the difference between one visit and two.
If the door was hit by a vehicle, a photo of the damaged panel and the track on that side helps the technician judge whether the door can be put back in service the same day.
